DAYTIME BREAK AND ENTER

(COBOURG, ON) – On Thursday September 11, 2014 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) at about 7:00 pm attended to a break and enter at a residence just north of Cobourg while the homeowner was away for the day.

OPP officers attended to the Burnham Street north home and spoke with the home owner who indicated that the residence was secure upon departure at approximately 9:00 am. The homeowner’s son had returned home at about 4:15 pm but did not initially realize the house had been entered until his mother arrived. It is believed that suspects had gained entry to the home through an open window on the front entrance door which allowed them to unlock the door from the inside.

Thieves stole approximately $2,000 worth of electronics and camera equipment, namely two laptop computers, a digital camera, a video camera, specialty camera lenses, binoculars, inexpensive jewellery and a pair of head phones.

OPP are continuing to investigate and would like to remind residents to make sure that their homes and vehicles are completely secured when occupants are not home or the vehicle is parked.

An open window may be nice for fresh air to circulate through your home, but it is just a target for people looking to steal your hard earned possessions. Thieves will often return if they know that expensive items will be replaced and the home owners do not take the necessary measures to secure their buildings and vehicles.
