Residents are reminded that it does not matter if you will be away for 15 minutes, a few hours, for the day, or for an extended holiday. It takes burglars only a few moments to enter your home and check for predictable places or valuables, and be on their way again. You are left not only with the physical loss and inconvenience, but also with a sense that your privacy and your home have been violated by strangers.

The key is to deter break-ins, get into the habit of locking doors and closing garage doors. Equip entry doors with deadbolts and install out-door motion sensor lights. Trim shrubbery to eliminate hiding places for unwanted visitors. Take steps to make your home appear occupied when you are away.

All these things can lessen the likelihood of break-ins.
