Cottage Fire Safety

Heading off to the cottage to enjoy the warm weather? Here are some items to keep in mind this year regarding fire safety at your home away from home.

Just like your home, your cottage or cabin must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside sleeping areas. It’s the law! Pack a smoke alarm with fresh batteries before heading out.

Make sure the entrance to the property has a clearly visible sign indicating the property number.

Many cottages or cabins are heated by wood stoves. Ensure your chimneys are cleaned and inspected annually. Remember to allow ashes from your wood stove or fireplace to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight fitting lid. Store your ashes container outside, away from the cottage or any sheds.

Check with the local municipal office or the Ministry of Natural Resources for burning restrictions or by-laws. When a restricted fire zone order is implemented, no outdoor fires are permitted.
