EMDC Death Investigation Update
Wednesday, March 6, 2014

On November 1, 2013, at 9:55 a.m., the London Police Service was notified of a death at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC). The investigation determined that inmate Adam Kargus had been murdered in his holding cell during the evening of October 31, 2013. Mr. Kargus’ cellmate, Anthony George, was subsequently charged with murder. In part, the investigation involved interviews with EMDC staff and inmates as well as a review of video from within the institution. Information obtained during this investigation determined that a second investigation was required to look into the actions, or lack thereof, of correctional staff leading up to and during the homicide.

This morning, the following two correctional officers and one supervisor were each charged with one count of Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life, contrary to section 215 of the Criminal Code, then released:

Correctional Officer Leslie Lonsbary, 47 years
Correctional Officer Gregory Langford, 55 years
Operational Manager Stephen Jurkus, 52 years

Their first court appearance will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 9:30 AM in courtroom ‘A’ at the London courthouse at 80 Dundas Street.
