COMPUTER FRAUD

(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON.) – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Haldimand County detachment is investigating an attempt computer fraud at a South Coast Drive, Haldimand County, ON address.

On Friday January 24th, 2014 at approximately 2:30 pm Police received a complaint of an attempt computer fraud. The complainant advised police that a call was received from a male advising that he was from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.) Cyber Fraud Unit and needed access to her computer. Access was granted through a remote access and it wasn’t until banking information was requested from the complainant that suspicion arose. The call was discontinued and when the complainant attempted to use the computer it was found to be locked. The computers power source was disconnected and must now be serviced by a computer technician to be restored.

Computer users are reminded, that unless you initiate the call, do not allow anyone access to your computer. Don’t give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with.

Change your passwords frequently as well.

Reputable agencies will not ask for this information unless you have initiated the call.
