Collision On Grey RD 9 – Driver In Critical Condition

(TOWNSHIP OF SOUTHGATE, ON) On Monday, January 26, 2015, at approximately 3:22 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision between a tractor trailer and a motor vehicle at the intersection of Grey Rd. 9 and Grey Rd. 109 in the Township of Southgate.

Investigation revealed that a 2013 Peterbilt tractor trailer travelling west bound on Grey Rd. 9 collided with a 2009 Hyundai Elantra at the intersection of Grey Rd. 9 and Southgate Sideroad 39 after the Hyundai, which was travelling southbound on Southgate Sideroad 39, failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the intersection.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 47 year old woman from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA, was extricated from the vehicle by the Grey Highlands Fire Department. She was taken to a local hospital via ambulance and then air lifted to a London Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim, who was staying with a relative in the Township of Southgate, remains in critical condition.

The driver of the transport truck, a 57 year old male from Mitchell, Ontario, was not injured.

Grey Rd. 9 between Southgate Sideroad 41 and Hwy. 6 was closed for approximately 6 hours for the safety of emergency responders.

The OPP West Regional Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is assisting with the investigation.
