Collision Involving Horse And Buggy Sends Three To Hospital – Horse Euthanized At Scene

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Monday August 22, 2016, shortly after 5 p.m., a horse drawn buggy with was struck from behind by a car as it was travelling northbound on Perth Road 121 North of Millbank.

Investigation revealed that the horse drawn buggy was travelling North on the East gravel shoulder or Perth Road 121 between Perth Line 72 and Line 73. A northbound Honda Civic, travelling northbound in the northbound lane of Perth Road 121 neared the buggy and suddenly swerved towards it. The Honda struck the back of the buggy, shattering the buggy upon impact. The car continued into the East ditch and came to rest in a field.

The 62-year-old male operator of the buggy and his 61 year old female passenger, both residents of the Township of Perth East were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The 44-year-old male driver of the Honda, a resident of Hanover was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. He has been charged with “careless driving”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The horse was euthanized at the scene due to the extensive injuries sustained as a result of the crash.

The road was dry and driving conditions were ideal at the time of the collision.

Motorists are urged to give any horse drawn buggies or farm machinery a wide berth when passing. Be courteous and cautious when encountering them on our roadways.
