Coast Guard Rescues Passenger After Falling Off Sea-Doo Unbeknownst To Operator

(TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – On Friday, September 4, 2015 at approximately 11:33 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit was called to assist after a female was reported missing in Georgian Bay, after falling from the back of a Sea-Doo.

The female was a passenger onboard a 2011 Sea-Doo GTX that was being operated by a family member. They were heading across the water towards Griffith Island when she had fallen into the water unbeknownst to the operator.

The 62 year old female from Stoney Creek, Ontario, was wearing a life jacket. She was in the water for approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours before being rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard. She was in good spirits when located and did not require any medical assistance.

The Canadian Coast Guard (Cape Rescue), Ministry of Natural Resources (Gilphie II), RCC Trenton (C-130 Hercules), Inter-Township Fire Department, Owen Sound Fire Department, as well as several private boat operators, assisted in the search.

Grey County OPP would like to use this incident to illustrate the importance of wearing a life jacket/PFD. It’s an important reminder that wearing a lifejacket or PFD significantly increases survivability should a mishap occur.
