At 1:16 p.m. yesterday, a Traffic Unit officer observed a man riding a gas powered dirt bike southbound on the sidewalk over the Lacroix Street bridge. He turned west onto King Street and south onto Inshes Avenue where the officer stopped him.
The male driver was unable to provide any documentation for the dirt bike and the investigation revealed that it had been reported stolen in April from a property in Chatham. It was also learned that the driver is currently serving two driver licence suspensions.
A 24-year-old Chatham man was arrested and has been charged with being in possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of driving while under suspension, operating a motorcycle without a helmet, unlawfully operating an off road vehicle on a highway, and operating a motor vehicle on a sidewalk. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
During the investigation a family member arrived to assist the accused. It was discovered she is also currently serving a licence suspension. A 42-year-old Chatham woman has been charged with driving while under suspension and her vehicle was towed from the road.
