(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – Yesterday, at approximately 12:00 pm officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were working with members of the OPP Aviation Services who were conducting aerial enforcement along Highway 401 west of Port Hope, Ontario. Initially, a motor vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed by officers in the aircraft near Cranberry Road at Welcome and this information was provided to OPP units on the ground. Uniformed officers attempted to stop this speeding motor vehicle, but it would not pull over. The vehicle’s direction and locations was monitored from the airplane with the occupants eventually fleeing the vehicle into the Northumberland County Forest
Responding officers set up containment in the area and were assisted by members of the Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine Unit (K9) who commenced a ground search. The aircraft remained in the area as all suspects were taken into custody. A search of the black 2002 Honda Civic resulted in a seizure of 117 grams of cannabis with a street value of $2,000 and 182 grams of cocaine with a street value of $16,800 along with other drug paraphernalia. Police also seized a machete hatchet and other knives within the occupants reach inside the vehicle.
The OPP officers involved in this incident have completed their investigation by charging the three males that were arrested at the scene on Woodland Road in Hamilton Township.
Cody Allen PURTELL, 19 of no fixed address and Garret JONES, 19 of Hastings Highlands have been charged together with the following offences:

Possession for the purpose of trafficking (cannabis)
Possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)
Trafficking cocaine
Criminal Code charges
Possession of property obtained by crime
Possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose

Both accused are being held in custody for a bail hearing on Thursday September 19, 2013 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg, Ontario at 1:30 pm.
A 17 year old male with no fixed address, who cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has also been charged with the following offences:

Breach of undertaking – 2 counts
Fail to comply disposition
Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose

The youth is also being held in custody for a bail hearing on Thursday September 19, 2013 in Youth Court in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg, Ontario at 1:30 pm.
