Capsized Canoeist Rescued In Whalley Lake

(MAGNETAWAN, ON) On Tuesday April 21, 2015, the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Magnetawan Fire Department and the Parry Sound Emergency Medical Service (EMS) from Burk’s Falls responded to a call on Whalley Lake, Magnetawan when a canoeist had capsized his canoe.

At approximately 2:30p.m., the lone male fell into the lake when his canoe overturned and was unable to get out of the cold water. OPP and fire fighters managed to borrow a canoe from a local residence and rescue the man.

EMS took the canoeist to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The male was wearing his lifejacket when his canoe overturned, which kept him alive until help came.

Almaguin Highlands OPP would like to remind people that the ice has just recently come off the water. The lakes and rivers are still very cold and people should stay off the water until temperatures warm up.

Remember to always wear your lifejacket when boating or participating in water sports.
