CANOEIST RESCUED FROM INNER BAY OF LONG POINT

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment responded to an incident at a Woodstock Avenue, Long Point, Norfolk County, Ontario, address.

On Friday, April 18, 2014 at approximately 6:55 p.m., the Norfolk County OPP, Norfolk County Fire Services, Norfolk County Paramedics and Ornge aircraft responded to Long Point Beach after receiving a call from a concerned family member.

Through investigation, it was determined that a 52 year old male of Waterloo, Ontario entered the water with a 14’ canoe and proceeded towards some ice that was located out in the middle of the Inner Bay.

The male was observed approximately 1 mile off the shore line when the canoe that he was in had tipped over ejecting the male into the water. The male was inappropriately dressed for the conditions and had no safety equipment on board his canoe. Concerned family members standing on the shore line immediately contacted 911.

Norfolk County Fire Services responded with a Zodiac water rescue boat and were able to assist with bringing the male to shore. The male had been in the water for approximately 30 minutes and was suffering from hypothermia.

He was subsequently taken to a local area hospital where he was treated and released.
