(TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH FRONTENAC, ON) – On Saturday, July 4, 2015 at approximately 8:45 p.m., Frontenac Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a capsized canoe in Bob’s Lake, approximately 100 meters from shore, on Mica Point Lane in the Township of South Frontenac.
When the canoe capsized, two adult males and a 3 year- old boy were sent into the water. Bystanders in the nearby cottages were able to safely pull the child out of the water because he was wearing a life jacket.
The two adult males went under the water. A rescue effort was conducted by police, fire and civilians. The rescue effort ceased due to lack of daylight and the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) were contacted to attend the scene.
At approximately 1:00 p.m. on July 5, 2015 the USRU located the two males in the water.
29 year-old Justin Thomas BUTTS of Kingston ON and 23 year-old Daniel MACDONALD of Kingston ON died at the scene.
The young child was taken to Kingston General Hospital for observation and later released to family members.
