Busy Long Weekend For Quinte West OPP

(QUINTE WEST, ON) – The Quinte West OPP reports that officers were busy over the Victoria Day long weekend. Between Friday May 20th at noon and Monday May 23rd at midnight, officers responded to almost 150 calls for service.

The focused efforts of the Quinte West OPP to reduce impaired driving in the month of May continued to deliver results. Two drivers were arrested and charged Friday night in separate impaired driving incidents.

On Saturday May 21st, 2016 at 1:30am Quinte West OPP conducted a traffic stop on West Street in the City of Quinte West. Officers suspected the driver was impaired by alcohol and conducted a road side breath test. As a result, the driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene for driving with more than 80 milligrams (mgs) of alcohol in blood.

Sean Morrissey, 35, of Trenton was charged with the following offences:

1) Operate motor vehicle while ability impaired by alcohol.

2) Operate motor vehicle with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood.

3) Three additional provincial offence tickets were issued to the driver.

On Saturday May 21st, 2016 at 3:30am Quinte West OPP conducted a traffic stop on Dundas Street West in the City of Quinte West. Police investigation quickly revealed that the driver of the motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and Police attempted to place the driver under arrest. The driver was assaultive towards the arresting officer and resisted the arrest. The driver fled from the scene on foot but was apprehended quickly by Police. A second responding officer attended the scene to assist with arresting the male. Police deployed a Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW) to complete the arrest.

Joshua Howdick, 29, of Cobourg has been charged with the following offences:

Operate motor vehicle with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood.

Assaulting a Peace Officer with intent to Resist Arrest.

Both drivers were released on a Promise to Appear with a court date of June 2nd, 2016, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.

UPDATE: QUINTE WEST OPP CONTRIBUTES TO CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK STATISTICS

(QUINTE WEST, ON) – Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world launched May 17th and wrapped up May 23rd. In support of Canada Road Safety Week, Quinte West OPP had dedicated officers assigned to traffic duty. Officers concentrated their efforts on the big four; impaired driving, aggressive driving, seatbelts, and distracted driving offences.

The Quinte West OPP contributed the following statistics to Canada Road Safety Week:

Number of Alcohol Impaired Driving Charges: 2

Number of Warn Range Suspensions: 1

Number of 90 Day ADLS: 2

Number of Fail to Yield Charges: 3

Number of Careless Driving Charges: 3

Number of Speeding Charges: 91

Number of Racing Charges: 1

Number of Seatbelt Charges: 11

Distracted Driving Charges: 16
