(COUNTY OF WELLINGTON) County of Wellington Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are reminding members of the public to ensure that the 5 point harness straps on car seats are tightened up.
OPP notes that a major inspection error with car seats is that parents and caregivers are not tightening up the harnesses on forward and rear facing car seats. As we enter into the winter months, this becomes an even bigger concern that the 5 point harness is not being tightened. Oversized and bulkier clothing can interfere with the correct use of the harness. Any blanket or cover required for extra warmth should always be placed over the infant or child, after the harness is secured.
A correctly used child restraint will reduce the likelihood of a child being injured or killed in a crash up to 75%. In addition, Car Seat Safety Check results from across Canada indicate that 4 out of 5 children are not properly restrained. Common mistakes include: Child not in the appropriate restraint; Child not harnessed in the restraint correctly; Seat belts/UAS not tight enough or cannot hold the car seat; Tether straps not used or used incorrectly.
If you have any questions about your car seats or how to locate a car seat clinic in your area, please contact Wellington County OPP (Rockwood) Constable Angela Stiles at 519 856 1506.
