Bruce Peninsula OPP Are Not Soliciting Funds From the Community

(BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Bruce Peninsula Detachment has received several inquiries from various residents about the OPP soliciting funds.

During the month of May the OPP has been contacted by several concerned residents after receiving a call from someone claiming to represent the Ontario Provincial Police. The caller indicated that they were soliciting funds in order to assist with placing a stuffed animal in the rear of police vehicles that would aid a child in a crisis situation or traumatic event.

The Ontario Provincial Police does NOT solicit funds from members of the community. The OPP currently have a Community Bear Program in place thanks to the generous support of Aviva Canada Inc. This community partnership with Aviva Canada Inc. provides OPP officers with black and white teddy bears to give out to distressed children that may be encountered while carrying out police duties.

With the support of Aviva Canada, the “Community Bear” is now on daily patrol in more than 1,600 OPP police vehicles in the province of Ontario.

Children have little way of understanding what has happened to their parents or even to themselves in any stressful situation. Police officers know the trauma children suffer, but while attempting to comfort child victims, officers so often become only one more frightening aspect of an already overwhelming and terrifying experience.

The Community Bears are available for gifting to children in distress as a means of comforting them and forming a bond between the child and officer. This allows that child to focus on something positive
