Brantford Crime Briefs – 24Oct2016

Type: Domestic Dispute

Incident # 16-39718

Date: October 21, 2016

Incident: On Friday, October 21, 2016 at approximately 12:00 p.m. a man and a woman, who were formerly in a romantic relationship, engaged in a verbal argument at the man’s residence. The argument escalated and the woman threw an object at the man, striking him in the hip. She then shoved the man into a bookshelf. The man struck his head causing a laceration. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and the woman was arrested.

As a result, a 23 year-old Brantford woman was charged with Assault with a Weapon, Breach of Probation x’s 3, and Fail to Comply with Recognizance. She was held for a bail hearing. The man was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

Domestic assaults are criminal offences. Before life stressors escalate to the point of physical violence and threats, the Brantford Police Service encourages men and women who are experiencing difficulties, to take advantage of the services offered in the community.

Type: Impaired Driver

Incident # 16-39798

Date: October 21, 2016

Location: West Street (500 Block)

Incident: On Friday, October 21, 2016 at approximately 10:00 p.m., Community Patrol Officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program on West Street. At this time, police spoke with a driver who displayed signs of impairment. The driver provided samples of his breath into a roadside screening device which indicated that he was over the legal limit of alcohol. The driver was subsequently arrested and taken to the Brantford Police Service where he provided further samples of his breath as required by law. The results were 180 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and 170 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.

The accused, a 29 year-old Brantford man was charged with Over 80 blood alcohol and released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. The vehicle was impounded for a mandatory seven day seizure.

Type: Scam

Incident # 16-39889

Date: October 22, 2016

Incident: On Tuesday, October 22, 2016 a woman received a telephone call from a person claiming to be a representative of Roger’s Communications. The person stated that they were offering her a discount on their services and asked that she provide them with personal information to complete the process. The woman provided the information, however after the conversation felt uneasy about the transaction. She contacted Rogers who confirmed that they had not contacted her and that it most likely was a scam.

How to protect yourself from identity theft

• Never provide personal information through the Internet or by email.

• Keep your access codes, user ID, passwords, and PINs secret.

• Keep your address current with all government departments and agencies.

• Be careful before you click on links in any email you receive.

• Caller ID is a useful function. However, the information displayed can be altered by criminals.

• Protect your social insurance number. Don’t use it as a piece of ID and never reveal it to anyone unless you are certain the person asking for it is legally entitled to that information.

• Shred unwanted documents or store them in a secure place.

Type: Intoxicated Person

Incident # 16-39906

Date: October 22, 2016

Location: Murray Street at Mary Street

Incident: On Saturday, October 22, 2016 at approximately 4:45 p.m. a Community Patrol Officer was on Murray Street when they observed a man staggering as he walked. The man approached the officer’s police vehicle and without saying anything, entered the back seat. When the officer spoke to the man, he indicated he believed the cruiser was a taxi and demanded a ride home. Police attempted to located a sober person to take the man to, however were unable to do so. As a result, a 46 year-old Brantford man was charged with Being Intoxicated in a Public Place. He was taken to the Brantford Police Service and released when sober.

Type: Stunt Driving

Incident # 16-39940

Date: October 22, 2016

Location: King George Road at Varadi Avenue

Incident: On Saturday, October 22, 2016 at approximately 9:00 p.m. a Community Patrol Officer was conducting road safety traffic enforcement in the area of King George Road at Varadi Avenue and observed a silver Dodge Dart travelling at a very high rate of speed. A speed measuring device was used and registered the vehicle as travelling 110 k/m per hour. King George Road is a posted 50 k/m per hour zone. A traffic stop was conducted with the vehicle and the 17 year-old male driver was charged with Stunt Driving. The vehicle was impounded for a mandatory seven day seizure.

Incident # 16-40059

Date: October 23, 2016

Location: Market Street South (0-100 Block)

Incident: On Sunday, October 23, 2016 at approximately 5:20 p.m. a concerned citizen contacted police in regards to a vehicle that was driving in erratic manner on Veteran’s Memorial Parkway. A description of the vehicle was provided, and police located the vehicle in a parking lot on Market Street South. Police spoke with the driver who displayed signs of impairment. The driver provided samples of her breath into a roadside screening device which indicated that she was over the legal limit of alcohol. As a result, the driver was arrested and transported to the Brantford Police Service were she provided further samples of her breath as required by law. The results were 163 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and 159 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. As a result, a 19 year-old Brantford woman was charged with Over 80 blood alcohol and released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. The vehicle was impounded for a mandatory seven day seizure.
