Bomb Scare In Hanover – Portion Of 10th Street Closed

On Tuesday April 14th, 2015 at 4:25pm, members of the Hanover Police Service responded to a

disturbance call in the 200 block of 10th Street. Hanover officers arrived on scene and observed an agitated male screaming from an upper apartment, above an area business. Police determined the male was bleeding from his hands with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries.

With the assistance of the West Grey Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, officers set up a perimeter for public safety reasons and closed 10th Street between 7th Avenue and 9th Avenue. The male continued acting aggressively towards Police while throwing numerous items from the apartment to the sidewalk below. The suspect threatened and challenged officers while indicating that he was in possession of explosives and firearms.

Police observed the suspect start two fires in the apartment at which point officers entered the

apartment unit and utilized a conducted energy weapon to make the arrest. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Hanover and District Hospital where he received medical treatment for his injuries. The officers were able to extinguish both fires by using several fire extinguishers. The Hanover Fire Department attended and confirmed the fires had been extinguished.

The suspect was later released from hospital and is being held by the Hanover Police Service for a bail hearing on April 15th 2015. He will be facing numerous criminal offences under the Criminal Code of Canada.

The Hanover Police Service has contacted the Special Investigations Unit, since it was determined the suspect sustained a fracture. The Hanover Police Service is thankful that no members of the public, fire fighters or police officers were injured. They continue to investigate this incident with the assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and members of the OPP Explosives Disposal Unit. It is anticipated that the 200 block of 10th street will remain closed until early afternoon on April 15th 2015.

The Hanover Police Service is asking for the public’s cooperation and patience as they work through this incident. Police are asking members of the public and business owners to avoid this area of 10th Street and an updated press release will be released when the roadway is reopened and the area is determined to be completely safe to the public.
