Bodies Recovered From Red Squirrel Lake

(CITY OF TEMISKAMING SHORES, ON) – On July 29, 2015 at approximately 2:50 p.m. members of the Temagami Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call on Red Squirrel Lake due to a floating vessel that had been located without occupants.

Further investigation indicated that two people went out on the boat and for reasons unknown at this time they did not return safely to shore.

On July 29, 2015 Ginette LABONTE, 51, of Harris Township was located in the water and pronounced dead at the scene. A male was not accounted for.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) attended the scene to assist with this investigation. On July 30, 2015 at approximately 2:45p.m., the body of a deceased male was recovered in the water and has been identified as Rene LABONTE, 54, of Harris Township.

The investigation is continuing and no foul play is suspected at this time. A post mortem is scheduled to be completed.

If you unexpectedly find yourself in the water, conditions such as wind, waves, temperature and more can impede your ability to locate and fasten a personal floatation device (PFD). Wearing an approved lifejacket or PFD will increase your chances of surviving a boating incident. Never underestimate the protection a floatation device can afford you. The OPP strongly encourages all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children.
