(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – As the summer continues on, Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received numerous calls regarding cyclists causing traffic hazards to motorists throughout the County.
OPP have learned that there are individuals and cycling clubs travelling along various routes within Northumberland County and have received complaints from motorists that the riders are not abiding by the rules of the road under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
The HTA defines the bicycle as a vehicle” that belongs on the road. A cyclist riding on the highway means mixing with other traffic. This is only safe when all traffic uses the same rules of the road.
Two rules that apply: 1) Slower traffic stays right. 2) Slower traffic must give right of way to faster traffic when safe and practical.
When everyone operates under these rules
