(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON.) – As another school year comes to an end, students are preparing to start summer holidays. In addition, the population will grow significantly as tourists and temporary residents visit the beaches and other points of interest across the county. This means that residents across Southern Bruce County can expect to see an increase in both pedestrian and bike traffic. The South Bruce OPP would like to remind riders and care givers about bicycle safety.
A bicycle rider is required to obey rules of the road including stopping at stop signs, using a sound signalling device (such as a horn) and having a light on after dark. Equally as important is the requirement to wear a bike helmet when riding. Although the law only requires the use of a bike helmet under the age of 18, a properly fit bike helmet is recommended to enhance the safety of all riders.
Safe Kids Canada advises a properly fit bike helmet decreases the risk of serious head injury by as much as 85%. The Bike Helmet Research Foundation notes a significant reduction in the number of child cyclists admitted to hospital with a head injury since helmet use became law.
The South Bruce OPP members have already been out warning riders about bike helmets. The set fine for riding without a helmet under 18 years of age is $75.00.
