Be Alert For Farm Vehicles

(HURON COUNTY, ON.) – As you drive through Huron County this summer and fall you will undoubtedly encounter farm vehicles. A safe and cautious driver must be prepared to encounter large slow moving vehicles at all times. Failing to pay attention and drive safely may lead to a crash that could’ve been avoided. The Huron County OPP Detachment would like to offer motorists some safety tips on sharing the road with farm equipment:

Recognize slow moving farm vehicles by the orange triangle sign and use caution. Stay well back and be prepared to stop. Slow moving vehicles can only travel up to a maximum of 40km/h.
Not all farm vehicles have turn signals – watch for farmer’s signaling a turn using hand signals.
Be aware that farmers with long or broad equipment sometimes need to make a wide turn. If a tractor swings right, be careful, it may be starting a left turn.
The farmer may be unable to pull off the road due to equipment weight or shoulder issues.
Leave a wide berth when passing and meeting farm vehicles. Often farm equipment will take up more than one lane and some pieces of equipment have pieces protruding that can be hard to see.
DON’T TAKE CHANCES WHEN PASSING, WAIT FOR A SAFE OPPORTUNITY.

Remember road safety always starts with you.
