Attempt To Commit Murder Charges Laid

(ONEIDA NATION OF THE THAMES FIRST NATION, ON) – On May 11, 2017, at approximately 1:09 a.m., the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation Police, assisted by the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to an incident on Oneida Road.

Two males and one female attended a residence on Oneida Road to confront occupants. When two of the occupants exited, an altercation ensued. During the altercation, one of the occupants brandished a firearm, and subsequently drove a motor vehicle towards the visitors, striking and injuring one of the males, and narrowly missing the female.

On May 12, 2017, the male and female accused persons were arrested by the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation Police, and the Middlesex County OPP Crime Unit executed a Criminal Code Search warrant at the residence. Members of the OPP West Region Crime Unit and the OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) assisted with the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, 29-year-old Layton ELIJAH, of Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation, Ontario, has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) with:

Assault with a weapon X2

Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm

Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

He was further charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) with:

Possession of a schedule I substance – other drugs X2

Possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine

Possession of a schedule II substance – other drugs

Possession of a schedule II substance cannabis marihuana – under 30 grams

Possession of a schedule II substance – cannabis resin – over 1 gram

Produce a schedule II substance – (cannabis marihuana)

33-year-old Vanessa CORNELIUS, of Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation, Ontario, has been charged under the CCC with:

Attempt to commit murder X2

Pointing a firearm

Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

Unauthorized possession of a firearm

Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm

Assault

Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

She was further charged under the CDSA with:

Possession of a schedule I substance – other drugs X2

Possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine

Possession of a schedule II substance – other drugs

Possession of a schedule II substance – cannabis marihuana – under 30 grams

Possession of a substance II substance – cannabis resin – over 1 gram

Produce a schedule II substance – (cannabis marihuana)

The accused persons were held in custody and are scheduled to answer the charges in a London court on May 17, 2017.
