On March 28, 2014 at 12:33 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded, with fire crews and vehicles from five stations, to a fire alarm at the above noted location. On arrival, a fire was reported to be on the sixth floor. The sixth floor hallway was filled with smoke and there was moderate heat and fire in a bedroom of an apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the apartment. Smoke was evacuated from the hallway, the fire unit as well as a couple of apartments above the fire unit. One resident from the fire unit was taken to hospital with a condition not directly related to the fire.
Residents were displaced from the building for a couple of hours, but were then allowed to return to their apartments. Additional agencies on scene included Guelph Transit, Guelph Wellington Medical Service (GWEMS), Guelph Police Service (GPS), Red Cross and Victim services.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and there is no estimate of damage at this time. Fire Prevention was on scene and will be continuing the investigation later today.
