(SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY, ON) -– Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been patrolling area roads with a cruiser equipped with cameras and a computer to scan licence plates to detect driving violations. This cruiser is referred to as an Automated Licence Plate Recognition Vehicle (ALPR) vehicle.
There are three cameras equipped on the cruiser that can scan motor vehicle licence plates from behind and approaching positions. This equipment can detect violations such as suspended driving, expired validation stickers, expired driver’s licence and other incidences where there is a vehicle of interest.
The officers have been operating this vehicle from July 1 to July 15, 2015 and have recorded the following charge statistics.
– Eight charges of expired licence plate validation stickers
– Six suspended driver charges
– Nine unlicenced driver’s
– Six insurance related charges
– One charge related to another Provincial Act
– One towed motor vehicle
The ALPR vehicle will continue to be used on areas roads by the officers at the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment.
