ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS Weekly Report

(STRONG TWP, ON) – On Wednesday December 16, 2015 the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Unit, was travelling on Highway 124, Strong Township when they recognized the driver of a south bound vehicle. The female driver was known to police to be a suspended driver.

OPP stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver, Christine MORRIS, 32 of McMurrich/Monteith Township. Further investigation led to the discovery of ecstasy and Percocet’s.

Police charged the accused with the following offences;

• Possession of a schedule I substance (3 counts), contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

• Drive while under suspension (2 counts), contrary to the section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused female was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday January 28, 2016 in Sundridge, Ontario.

KITCHENER MAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF VEHICLE

(SUNDRIDGE, ON) – On Friday December 18, 2015 at approximately 9:00 a.m., the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with its Criminal Investigation Unit was called to investigate a suspicious male in an orange jump suit walking on Highway 124.

Police arrived and found the male close to John Street and after a short investigation discovered the male had been released from a correctional facility the day before and had stolen two vehicles to travel north. The accused ran out of gas and made it to Sundridge when police arrested him.

The accused, Eugene GEHIERE, 32 of Kitchener Ontario was charged with the following offences;

• Possession of property obtained by a crime over $5000 (2 counts), contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

• Theft of motor vehicle (2 counts), contrary to section 333.1 of the Criminal Code

• Driving while disqualified – court order, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code

• Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused male was held in custody for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Monday, December 21, 2015 in Parry Sound, Ontario

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER DRIVING INTO THE DITCH

(ARMOUR TWP, ON) – On Saturday December 19, 2015 at approximately 9:00 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was patrolling Leggett Road and Chetwynd Road when they observed a vehicle in the ditch.

OPP investigated the collision and discovered that the driver had been drinking and subsequently arrested Richard CLARK, 53 of Burk’s Falls Ontario with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday January 28, 2016 in Sundridge, Ontario.

FESTIVE R.I.D.E STATS

(ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS, ON) – The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has completed the fourth week of the Festive R.I.D.E. program (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere). During this time, officers checked approximately 363 vehicles in the Almaguin Highlands area.

The Almaguin Highlands OPP would like to remind motorist to drive safe, drive sober and to have a safe holiday season.
