ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS OPP OFFICERS TARGET AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR THIS CIVIC HOLIDAY LONG WEEKEND

(ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS, ON) The Civic Holiday Long Weekend is traditionally one of the busiest long weekends of the year. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers with the Almaguin Highlands Detachment and North East Region Highway Safety Division were busy patrolling local roads, waterways and towns looking for aggressive behaviour.

Between Friday, August 2nd, 2013 and Monday, August 5th, 2013, police responded to 58 occurrences in the Almaguin Highlands area and issued a total of 104 Provincial Offences Act charges which included violations under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, Off Road Vehicle Act and the Canada Shipping Act.

Officers also conducted R.I.D.E programs throughout the area, checking in excess of 300 vehicles. Travis PERRY (29) of Keswick, Ontario was arrested and charged with Impaired Driving as a result of the R.I.D.E. program conducted in Magnetawan on August 4th, 2013. Danny RALSTON-HOLDEN (30) of South River was arrested and charged with impaired driving after he was observed operating a lawn tractor on Ottawa Street in South River on August 4th, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. Both males were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 in Sundridge, Ontario.

Almaguin Highlands Officers investigated two separate personal injury collisions involving all-terrain vehicles and personal watercraft respectively. On August 4th, 2013 at 5:45 p.m., Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a collision involving two all-terrain vehicles racing on a gravel roadway, at which time one of the all-terrain vehicles lost control, left the roadway, rolled over and ejected both the driver and passenger. A male youth sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. As a result of the incident, Gerry BUCKLAND (35) and Byron CROSBY (37) both of Oakville, Ontario were charged with multiple offences under the Highway Traffic Act and Off-Road Vehicles Act. Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident.

On August 4th, 2013 at 5:58 p.m., Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a collision involving two personal watercrafts on Eagle Lake in Machar Township. As a result of the collision, a male operating a personal watercraft sustained serious injuries. Devan TARSEY (19) of Springwater Township was charged under the Canada Shipping Act, Small Vessel Regulations for operating vessel in a careless manner.
