Alert: Seven Impaired Drivers A Month Being Caught In Huron County – Death Toll Doubles

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are well prepared for what is expected to be a busy weekend for those celebrating the start of summer this Canada Day Weekend. With the expected increase in traffic throughout Huron County’s roads, motorists can expect a high level of visibility from our local detachment officers.

“The goal of our Canada Day Weekend Traffic Safety Initiative is to ensure our drivers are driving in a responsible and safe manner leading to a weekend free of preventable deaths & injuries on our roadways, waterways and trails”. – Huron County OPP Sergeant Charlene Pollard.

Officers will be focusing their patrols on the “Big Four”. The “Big Four” refers to the four main causes of motor vehicle collision deaths:

· Distracted Driving

· Speeding/Aggressive Driving

· Impaired Driving

· Lack of Occupant Restraint

To date, Huron County OPP has seen an increase in Impaired and Over 80 charges compared to this time last year. Rising from 23 in 2014 to 42 this year.

Additionally, the number of fatalities from collisions in Huron County has also risen this year going from four (4) in 2014 to seven (7) in 2015.

Those that choose to put themselves and others at risk of a collision by driving irresponsibly and in an unsafe manner need to change their mindset.

Always think safety. Wear your seatbelt, obey the speed limit, avoid distractions and always commit to driving sober. Please enjoy your Canada Day Holiday Weekend in a responsible and safe manner.
