ALERT: 1 Out Of 40 Child Restraints Pass

(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON.) – On Thursday November 14th the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County detachment participated in a Child Restraint Inspection program on Argyle St, Caledonia, Haldimand County, ON.

During the inspection forty (40) child restraints were checked with only 1 passing the inspection. Inspectors found many of the restraints were not installed securely. The straps were not tight enough or were not used at all. 4 expired seats were also found still being used.

These types of errors can have fatal consequences.

Under the Highway Traffic Act it is the responsibility of the vehicle driver to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 are secured properly in a vehicle.

Children who are not 8 years of age, or 36 kgs (80 lbs) or 145 cm (4’9”) tall are required to be in an appropriate sized child restraint.

It is important for vehicle operators to read the Vehicle Owner’s Manual and the Child Restraint Manufacturer’s Instructions to ensure a proper installation.

“Children are precious and extra care must be taken when transporting them”, says OPP Haldimand County Detachment Commander Inspector Phil Carter.
