ACCUSED HELD FOR BAIL FOLLOWING ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

(MUNICIPALITY OF MEAFORD, ON) – On Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at approximately 6:57 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an assault that had just occurred in Meaford, in the Municipality of Meaford.

The victim and two male friends were sitting at a picnic table at the corner of Collingwood Street and Sykes Street North when the suspect, who was not known to the group of men, threatened to assault them for allegedly staring at him as he walked by. The group rebuffed the suspect, who then punched the victim in the face, before leaving the scene. The victim, 21, of North York, Ontario did not require medical attention.

Through investigation, the suspect was identified and arrested for assault on Sykes Street North a few minutes later. Officers located a steak knife in the waist band of the suspect’s shorts.

Matthew Michael MCQUARRIE, 27, of Collingwood, Ontario was transported to the Meaford OPP Detachment where he was held pending a bail hearing. MCQUARRIE, who is known to police, is charged with assault, carrying a concealed weapon and breach of probation under the Criminal Code.
