(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On May 1, 2016, at approximately 6:05 p.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed travelling on Centre Road, near Mulifarry Drive, in the Municipality of Adelaide Metcalfe, Ontario. The vehicle, a green Ford SUV, was measured to be travelling in excess of 60 kilometers per hour (km/hr) over the 60 km/h speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, an 18-year-old male from Kettle Point, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
On May 5, 2016, at approximately 8:55 a.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed westbound on Highway 401, near Elgin Road, in the Municipality of Thames Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a grey Toyota car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/hr over the 100 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 46-year-old female from North York, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On May 5, 2016, at approximately 2:17 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on McGillivray Road, near Brinsley Road, in the Municipality of North Middlesex, Ontario. The vehicle, a silver Nissan car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 130 km/hr in a 70 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, an 18-year-old female from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On May 7, 2016, at approximately 12:42 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on New Ontario Road, near McEwen Drive, in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a grey Ford pickup truck, was measured to be travelling in excess of 130 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 29-year-old male from North Middlesex, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On May 7, 2016, at approximately 3:12 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Vanneck Road, near Ten Mile Road, in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a silver Buick Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), was measured to be travelling in excess of 130 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 28-year-old female from North Middlesex, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On May 8, 2016, at approximately 8:54 a.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Elginfield Road, near Brook Road, in the Municipality of North Middlesex, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Ford pickup truck, was measured to be travelling in excess of 140 km/hr in the 90 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 35-year-old male from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On May 8, 2016, at approximately 2:21 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Plover Mills Road, near Clarke Road, in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a blue Hyundai SUV, was measured to be travelling in excess of 135 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 62-year-old male has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
The drivers’ vehicles were seized, and their driver’s licences suspended, for 7 days.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
