67 Year Old Driver Hits Cyclist – Helmets Save Lives

(MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ON) – In June 2015, Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a grey pickup truck, and a cyclist on a red bicycle, on Adelaide Street North, near Nine Mile Road.

The 67 year old male driver from Middlesex Centre, Ontario, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with fail to yield to traffic on through highway.

The 47 year old female cyclist from London, Ontario, suffered minor injuries. She was wearing a bicycle helmet, which cracked during impacts in the collision.

Bicycle helmets help to protect riders from serious head injuries. Cyclists under the age of 18 are required by law to wear an approved, properly fitted, and properly fastened bicycle helmet.

Motorists are reminded to watch for cyclists in rural areas and share the road. Be respectful, be courteous, slow down and pass only when it’s safe to pass. When passing a cyclist on the road, the best practise is to provide at least one metre (3 feet) between your vehicle and the cyclist, and whenever possible, vehicles should change lanes to pass a cyclist.

Bicycles are considered vehicles under the HTA requiring riders to follow the same rules as those who may drive any other type of vehicle on public roadways.
