(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) – Another “Racing” charge has been laid by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2016 a Huron County OPP officer spotted a Mercedes sports utility vehicle travelling southbound on Bluewater Veteran’s Highway north of Kingsbridge at a high rate of speed. The officer activated his RADAR unit and locked in the speed of the racing vehicle at 139 km/h, a whopping 59 km/h over the posted 80 km/h speed limit.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the driver was charged. 54-year-old Sanjiv GUPTA from Oakville has been charged with Racing. He will have to attend Provincial Offences court in Goderich on September 20, 2016 to answer to his charge. His licence has been suspended for seven days and his motor vehicle was impounded for a week.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
