(LONDON, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) today announced that they are continuing the investigation into the 1967 murder of 92 year old William Alexander GRAY in Listowel, Ontario. A reward of $50,000.00 is now offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his murder.
William Alexander GRAY was born Elma Township, Perth County, Ontario. He was not married and lived with his sister Helen on the family farm until 1946. In that year they moved into the house in Listowel at 381 Victoria Avenue North. Neither ever married. In 1962 Helen died, and after that the victim lived alone.
On June 25th, 1967 Chief Constable William SACHS of the Listowel Police Force was contacted by a family friend who had found the victim deceased inside his home. Chief Constable SACHS attended the scene and found the victim’s body in the bedroom doorway. The victim had been severely beaten and the house had been ransacked.
OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Detective Inspector P. SAWATZKY was assigned to assist with the investigation. An intensive investigation was conducted with numerous persons being interviewed but the murder remains unsolved.
The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch – Unsolved Homicide Investigative Team (UHIT), under the direction of Detective Inspector Ian MAULE, is conducting a review of this homicide which includes the re-examination of the evidence. As part of this review they are asking for the public’s assistance to help identify those responsible. “Someone could hold that vital piece of information that we need to solve this murder,†said Detective Inspector MAULE. “They may have thought the information was insignificant but we need them to come forward.â€
