5 Drug Overdoses At Sombra Bridge Bash

(LAMBTON, ON) – On Saturday July 9th, 2016 the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy with calls for service in relation to an event advertised as the “Sombra Bridge Bash” which was held on Saturday July 9th, 2016 in the St. Clair River, St. Clair Township. This event was advertised via social media and attracted an estimated 100 vessels and a further estimated 500 people.

The Lambton County OPP responded to several calls for service in relation to this event. However, of great concern to the Lambton OPP, were four calls for service in relation to five individuals who were in medical distress due to an alleged drug overdose. All the victims ranged from 17 to 23 years of age and informed police that they had ingested an illegal street drug commonly known as “Ecstasy.” Ecstasy or Methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic drug that alters mood and perception (awareness of surrounding objects and conditions). It is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens, producing feelings of increased energy, pleasure, emotional warmth, and distorted sensory and time perception.

All the victims were transported to hospital by attending Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with non-life threatening concerns. Investigation is presently on-going in an effort to ascertain the source of the illegal drugs.

The OPP is committed to taking proactive and collaborative action by working with community partners and its policing partners to prevent and/or reduce the inappropriate use and abuse of narcotics and other controlled substances within our communities.
