46 Distracted Driving Charges Laid in Seven Days

(LAMBTON, ON) – Between March 14 and March 20 2015 members of the Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) participated in a Region wide Distracted Driving Campaign.

Despite the OPP’s community disclosure of this Campaign through Media Releases and continued educational programs; the OPP laid 46 charges within the County of Lambton during a 7 day period. These charges primarily involved hand- held entertainment and communication devices.

The fine for using a handheld device or having a display screen visible to the driver is currently $280 and three demerit points upon conviction under the Highway Traffic Act.

More importantly, Province wide OPP collision data reveals that driver inattention was a causal factor in 12 of this year’s 51 fatal collisions to date.

The OPP will continue to support Distracted Driving Legislation through continued enforcement and education in order to make our highways a safer place in which to travel.
