$40,000 Credit Card Fraud

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment is investigating a report of a credit card fraud from a business located in Norfolk County, Ontario.

Between May 22, 2013 and June 20, 2013 five orders were placed over the telephone and charged to a credit card. The retailer has since learned that the transactions were fraudulent in nature.

The total amount charged is more than $40,000.

The Norfolk County OPP is recommending caution when large orders are made over the telephone.

“Every merchant should be aware of online credit card fraud, although it is something that can never be completely eliminated, but rather something that must be managed. One of the most important factors in controlling fraud is understanding the customer and implementing security measures that can adapt to the level of risk in each transaction. When in doubt, call the credit card issuer to verify the validity of credit card and request further identification.” comments Inspector Zvonko Horvat, Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander.
