(SOUTH-WEST OXFORD, ON.) – On February 18, 2016 at approximately 2:50 a.m. Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed travelling on Ostrander Road in South-West Oxford Township.
Police observed the vehicle to be travelling at an approximate speed of 136km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The traffic stop was initiated on Broadway Street in Tillsonburg. Based on the observations and investigative steps taken by police, the male driver, 23-year-old Michael RIBEIRO of Norfolk County was charged with the following:
Race a motor vehicle ~ Highway Traffic Act
Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle ~ Criminal Code of Canada
His driver’s licence was suspended for 7 days and the vehicle has been impounded for the prescribed 7-day period.
Drivers who engage in high risk driving behavior put everyone at risk. Speeding makes it difficult for drivers to react to change, stop suddenly and control a vehicle. In the case of a collision, the higher the speed the more severe the collision and the more likely that serious injury or death will occur.
OPP would like to remind the motoring public to manage their time and respect all the rules of the road when travelling.
