17 Motor Vehicle Collisions

(FORT FRANCES, ON.) – Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 17 motor vehicle collisions over the Remembrance Day weekend.

Several of the collisions occurred as a result of drivers travelling too fast on snow covered roads. Although officers reported the majority of collisions involved vehicles losing control and sliding off the roadway, some collisions police responded to were more serious in nature.

On November 8, 2013 officers were dispatched to Highway 11 just east of Ottertail Landing. When officers arrived they found two vehicles had lost control and collided with a rock cut. The roads were reported as treacherous with very icy roads and poor visibility at the time of the collision. No injuries were reported.

Further on the November 8th, 2013, OPP and Rainy River District Emergency Medical Services were called to a two vehicle collision on Highway 11 near Worthington Road #1. One vehicle was making a left hand turn when it was rear-ended by a second vehicle. The collision resulted in a minor facial injury as a result of airbag deployment. The roads were snow covered at the time of the collision.

On November 9, 2013 officers were on patrol in Emo when they came across a pickup truck in the ditch on Highway 11 at Front Street. The investigation revealed the vehicle had lost control while northbound on Front Street. The vehicle subsequently hit two signs on the west side of the street, crossed over the railway tracks and entered the ditch. No injuries occurred.

On November 11, 2013, OPP officers, Rainy River District Emergency Medical Services and Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service responded to a single motor vehicle crash on Highway 11 near Cousineau Road in Halkirk Township. Investigation revealed that the driver had lost control and struck a rock cut resulting in minor injuries. Roads were icy at the time of the collision.
