(Town of New Tecumseth, ON)- The officers of the Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been in full force during the Festive R.I.D.E (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) initiative commencing the 24th of November 2014 until the 2nd of January 2015. While OPP officers do increase their number of R.I.D.E. stops over the holidays, they are reminding drivers that R.I.D.E. stops are carried out throughout the year, throughout the province as part of the OPP’s Provincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP).
During the Festive initiative Nottawasaga OPP officers conducted 111 R.I.D.E spot checks throughout the communities of Essa Township, Adjala-Tosorontio and the Town of New Tecumseth. As a result of the R.I.D.E spot checks the following numbers reflect the dedicated work by Nottawasaga OPP officers since the 24th of November 2014:
– 6,754 motor vehicles checked
– 15 Impaired Drivers arrested and charged
There are many factors that drive these numbers from one year to the next. However, we believe the vast majority of drivers do understand that driving sober and drug-free is the only way to end the numerous impaired driving related deaths that occur on Ontario roads every year. It’s a relatively small number of drivers who still choose to get an impaired driving charge over the simpler and less costly solution of not getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and/or drugs. Unfortunately, the irresponsible behaviour of one driver can negatively affect the lives of many.
The Nottawasaga OPP wants to thank those who drive sober, and those who dial ‘911’ to report impaired drivers. Together we can all help reduce the number of fatalities on our roads, and impaired drivers out there. Happy and Healthy New Year to Everyone.
