10,000 Collisions In London During 2014

In 2014, there were over 10,000 collisions in the City of London. This represents an increase of approximately 6%, when compared to collision data from 2013. The majority of these collisions are preventable caused by distracted, impaired and/or aggressive drivers.

Despite repeated warnings and educational campaigns about the consequences of these driving behaviours, little seems to be changing. In 2014, the London Police Service issued 2,187 offence notices to motorists who were driving while holding or using a hand-held electronic communication device. This represents a 30% increase in the number of charges laid, when compared to 2013. Education of the public through the enforcement of this offence is critical to improving compliance to this law; and compliance to this law is critical to ensuring that our roadways are safe for all road users.

The high collision intersections for 2014 are listed below:

1) Wellington Rd/ Commissioners Rd – 78

2) Highbury Ave/ Oxford St-77

3) Highbury Ave/ Hamilton Rd- 76

4) Wonderland Rd/ Oxford St- 73

Members of our police service will continue to conduct proactive enforcement throughout our city and at many of these high collision intersections for various offences.

The London Police Service is committed to making our roads as safe as possible. The majority of the citizens of London demand this of us. We need to continue to work together to discourage such dangerous driving behaviours. Lets work together at reducing the number of collisions in London for 2015 and at making our roadways safe for everyone!
