Drowning In Lake Erie

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – On July 21, 2021, at approximately 7:10 p.m., the Elgin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a possible drowning in Lake Erie, between Port Bruce and Port Burwell, Malahide Township.

Members of OPP, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton (JRCC), the Canadian Coast Guard, Elgin – St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Malahide Fire Services assisted.

Investigation determined that an individual fell into the water from a vessel while fishing with friends. The individual was pulled from the water and transported to land, where he was taken to hospital. 

Life saving measures were initiated by friends and continued by paramedics, however he later died in hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Ryan LEPPARD-GROENEWEGEN, 49-years-old of London.

No foul play is suspected.
