Stolen Vehicle Crash Triggers 1am Evacuation

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – A stolen pickup truck was driven off the west end of Kitchigami Road and started on fire, causing damage to a nearby structure and the evacuation of several residences in the area just after 1:00 a.m. The incident is still under investigation by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Just after 1:00 a.m. Huron OPP officers responded to Kitchigami Road west of Bluewater Highway after receiving a report of a single vehicle crash down an embankment. Upon arrival officers located a Dodge pickup truck that had crashed into the trees and had started on fire. Officers arrived within several minutes and tried to extinguish the flames, however the high winds made matters worse, causing the truck and immediate area to continue burning. Several nearby residences were evacuated and three fire departments from Goderich, Central Huron and North Huron attended to battle the flames. Huron County EMS attended as well. One officer was treated for smoke inhalation and was later released from hospital.

The suspect driver managed to flee the scene prior to police arrival but was later located and arrested at approximately 8:30 a.m. The suspect remains in custody at this time. Roads have since reopened, and emergency crews have cleared the scene.
