Spike Belt Used To Stop Speeding Stolen Pickup Truck

(MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION, ON) – On January 16, 2017, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17, Mississauga First Nation.

Police observed a westbound pick-up truck on Highway 17 travelling at a high rate of speed and attempted a vehicle stop. The pick-up truck continued travelling at speeds over 140 kilometres per hour and passing other vehicles dangerously.

Police learned the pick-up truck was stolen from the Toronto area. A spike belt was deployed successfully, west of Iron Bridge and the male driver arrested.

There were no injuries to the public or police.

As a result, Tyriel BECKFORD, 25 years of age, from Calgary, Alberta, was charged with:

Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5000-in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the CC; and

Drive Motor Vehicle-No Licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on February 18, 2017.

17 YEAR OLD CHARGED WITH STUNT DRIVING

(MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION, ON) – On January 17, 2017 shortly before 9:00 a.m., a Mississauga First Nation Police officer was on regular patrol duties on Highway 17 near the Territory of Mississauga First Nation.

The officer observed an eastbound vehicle travelling at a speed over 50 kilometres over the posted 90 km/ hour zone. A traffic stop was initiated.

As a result, Maresa CAPPELLI, 17 years of age, from Iron Bridge, Ontario, was charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle While Performing Stunt- 50+kmph in a posted 90 km/hr zone, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The vehicle was impounded for 7 days and her driver’s licenced seized for 7 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on March 15, 2017.

EXPIRED TRAVEL PERMIT-DRIVER CHARGED

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On January 17, 2017, officer from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly before 7:00 a.m., police observed a westbound vehicle on Leacock Street. A traffic stop was initiated. Investigation determined the vehicle had an expired travel permit and the driver could not produce a valid insurance card.

As a result, Robert MIDDAUGH, 28 years of age, from Blind River, Ontario, was charged and issued two provincial offence notices:

Drive Motor Vehicle Not In Accordance with Permit Limitations, contrary to section 8 of the Highway Traffic Act; and

Fail to Have Insurance Card, contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insure Act.
