9 Year Old Hero Attempts Rescue Of Man Through Ice Update – Name Of Deceased Released

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County detachment is investigating an incident at a Concession 8, Waterford, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

On Saturday, February 18, 2017 at approximately 5:08 p.m., OPP, Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services, Paramedics and Air Ambulance responded to the Waterford North Conservation Area for a report of two (2) people falling through the ice.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a 68-year-old male from Hamilton, Ontario and a 9-year-old male from Burlington, Ontario were on the ice of the Waterford North Conservation Area.

Both were approximately 80 feet from the shore line when the 68-year-old male fell through the ice while ice fishing in approximately 15 feet of water. The 9-year-old child who was skating around the pond, attempted to save the male when he fell through the ice. Several bystanders came to the aid of both males, at which time a Good Samaritan pulled the 9-year-old child out of the water. Several attempts were made to remove the adult male however those attempts were unsuccessful.

Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services attempted to locate the male however the search for the male had to be suspended due to safety issues.

On Sunday, February 19, 2017, the OPP Under-Water Search and Recovery Unit attended the scene and assisted in locating the outstanding male. At approximately 12:15 p.m., members located the male and brought him back to the shoreline.

As a result, 68-year-old Jani DALIYANAZLOU of Hamilton, Ontario was pronounced deceased by the attending coroner.

The OPP would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens that assisted with this incident. Their courageous actions resulted in saving the life of this young boy. I would also like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.” – comments Constable Ed Sanchuk
