Driver /Cycling TIPS
As the warm weather approaches, we can expect to see a higher volume of cyclists on our roadways. Members of the public, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility. Safety on our roads is about being courteous to all road users.
All vehicles, including bicycles must follow the rules of the road at all times. Bicycles are vehicles and cyclists have the same rights and duties as motorists. Drivers must pay extra attention to cyclists and pedestrians, signalling all lanes changes and allowing at least one metre distance between your vehicle and the cyclist when passing. Give yourself extra passing distance during slippery or wet roads conditions. Pass at a moderate speed, as cyclists may be started by a fast approaching vehicle.
Cyclists are required to wear a helmet if under the age of 18, and ride defensively, obeying all traffic signs and signals. Cyclists should make their presence known, by wearing bright coloured clothing, and using reflective lights in the front, side and rear of the bicycle. Make certain you are aware of your surroundings, and know what is in front and behind you. Remember, obeying the rules of the road and being courteous of others will assist in keeping our roads safe for everyone to drive on.
