(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment want to remind all Norfolk County residents that if they receive a call indicating that you have won a large amount of currency, please hang up the phone. This is a SCAM.
Between Thursday, November 14, 2013 and Wednesday, November 20, 2013 a resident from Norfolk County received several phone calls from an unknown male indicating that they had won $7 million dollars. The unknown male advised the homeowner that a cheque would be arriving at their address in order to pay for the taxes on the winnings.
The resident attended the Norfolk County Detachment on Friday, November 22, 2013 and advised that a cheque did arrive in the mail and that the unknown suspect was continually calling. Directions were left by the suspect to cash the cheque and then forward an International money order to a United States, Clinton, North Carolina address. The suspect also wanted the money order placed in a Christmas card and mailed so that no one would become suspicious.
“No money was ever forwarded to the unknown male however the homeowner contacted police to report this fraud so that no other members in the community would fall victim to this scam. Don’t become a statistic. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop getting money, banking information or personal information. The best thing to do is to simply hang up the phone,†comments Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP.
