John SMOLA – Hit and Run

(Ottawa, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police, Ottawa Detachment has concluded the investigation into a fail to remain collision that occurred on Highway 417 near Bronson Avenue.

On November 14, 2013, at approximately 8:30 pm, a suspect vehicle being driven in a very aggressive and dangerous manner was travelling on Highway 417. As it was approaching another vehicle in the same lane, the other vehicle moved over to let it pass. While passing at a high speed and swerving, the suspect vehicle struck the other vehicle sending it across several lanes striking the right barrier and returning across the lanes and striking the left barrier. The suspect vehicle never stopped for the collision and was observed leaving the scene at a high rate of speed.

The occupants of the other vehicle, a 35 year old mother and her 13 year old daughter were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect vehicle was described as a newer model white Subaru Legacy sedan with damage to the right front with possible blue paint from the other vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, the suspect driver, 54 year old John SMOLA of Ottawa has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in Ottawa court on December 19, 2013.
