(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On December 2, 2013 at approximately 4: 40pm officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Rainy River District Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service and Watten Volunteer Fire Department responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a westbound Chrysler automobile and an eastbound commercial motor vehicle. The collision occurred on Highway 11 between Windy Point Bridge and Reef Point Road.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Police can confirm the female passenger of the Chrysler was confirmed deceased at the scene. The male driver of the Chrysler was transported to Fort Frances hospital by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries at hospital. The driver of the commercial motor vehicle was not injured in the collision. The OPP continues to investigate the collision in consultation with the Regional Coroner’s office. A post mortem examination is pending.
As of 7:10 pm, Highway 11 was reopened to one lane of traffic. Officers remain on scene and are requesting motorists proceed with caution through this area to ensure the safety of those still working in the area.
