(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON.) The Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to alert the citizens in the surrounding communities of a phone scam that is going on in the area.
The Sioux Lookout OPP investigated a complaint where unknown an individual contacted local residents, posing as a lawyer, advising that one of their family members had been arrested in the Province of Quebec, and money was needed to get them released from jail.
The suspect then proceeded to provide instructions to the residents on how to transfer the money to them using a Western Union money transfer. By the time the residents realized it was a scam, they had already sent several thousand dollars to the suspect.
While the investigation is ongoing, the Sioux Lookout OPP would like to remind all citizens to be sure to ask any such caller lots of relevant questions, and verify all of the information they are providing to them before sending any money.
If anyone has experienced the same scam, they are asked to report it to their local police service or call Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
